Embracing innovation and fostering digital growth in South Wales
South Wales are experiencing a surge in digital markets and trends with Monmouthshire in particular being apart of the South Wales top 5 tech cluster. Boasting a large portfolio of local businesses, start-ups and entrepreneurs to whom they have already supported offline, Monmouthshire Business & Enterprise (as part of Monmouthshire County Council) approached us to render its services of investment practices, expert advice and support into a well executed and seamless digital experience. The promotion of enterprise, economic development and job creation being key priorities for Monmouthshire County Council and the Monmouthshire Business & Enterprise team. BAO were approached as a full service digital partner to solve one problem: How could they successfully departmentalise an array of services in a visually clear and consistent manner?
Fostering digital growth in rural South Wales
In our research it was discovered that similar institutions in neighbouring regions such as Cardiff, Bristol and Gloucestershire had a very common style, so we were tasked to create a truly unique corporate identity to make Monmouthshire Business & Enterprise stand out from the crowd. The corporate identity had to be approachable, prosperous and attract their user base to engage with the brand through various digital channels.
Monmouthshire Business & Enterprise had six different subsidiaries of the organisation, each targeting varying audiences, it was therefore our challenge to create a visually consistent yet flexible brand that satisfied the goals of every stakeholder. Our design team defined an iconic silhouette inspired by the rolling hills of the region and re-aligned it to resemble the first letter of the region's name. We then approached each key stakeholder to introduce a set of specific colour ways and style guidelines that could be applied to any given scenario all whilst utilising the overarching silhouette of the organisation.
Creative thinking for an aspiring digital leader
With six subsidiaries to the organisation it forced our UX team to implement a creative navigational solution for the large volume of content expected to be shown throughout the website. A tiered, touch-friendly navigation system paired with distinct iconography to support each subsidiaries colour palette provides a clear signpost for a user as they browse through each section of the website. Being a responsive friendly solution, the navigation reduces to iconography for tablet devices and reverts to a simplified list of links on smartphones making the website a truly unique experience across all user touch points.
Completing the corporate identity
As soon as the overarching brand style had been agreed we defined all supporting brand assets including brand guidelines, social media material and print collateral such as business cards and event banners designed specifically for each different subsidiary of the organisation.
Monmouthshire Business & Enterprise have since established themselves as a digital thought leader in South Wales experiencing an increase in local businesses and entrepreneurs contacting them for support and funding advice.
