Case Study - How Migrating from Magento to Shopify Improved One Store's Revenue

You hear about businesses moving from Shopify to Magento quite a lot, citing reasons that they are "upgrading" to a better system or that they have outgrown the Shopify platform, which in some cases might be true, however not in the case of long term friend of the business, The Cult & Classic. In this article we'll walk you through the reasons why they wanted to move away from Magento and how we moved their store to Shopify.


We originally launched fashion start-up the Cult & Classic back in early 2015 on what was then the clients preferred e-Commerce platform, Magento. It was the platform that would grow with the business and provide the most flexibility as the company found its feet in the fashion industry, at least that's what they first thought. 

Given the ambitions of the brand and the benchmark set by major fashion labels who were already using Magento (Tom Ford, Christian Louboutin etc.), it seemed an obvious choice for C&C to make.

Magento - Powerful and flexible

At the time Shopify hadn't developed into the complete e-Commerce platform that it is today and since C&C's launch, Magento had served C&C very well. With our well suited house style and development expertise we were able to create a website on Magento that converted well and had a bounce rate of just 9%. From a technical point of view it allowed us to integrate advanced customer loyalty schemes, gave us the flexibility and control to create a branded one page checkout and fine tune user journey's to the very last detail. For all of its pluses though, and there are lots of them, its important (for start-ups in particular) to factor in some potential deal breakers. Magento is a self-hosted e-Commerce platform that places more technical responsibility on a business owner to routinely monitor & manage the hosting environment and requires them to also stay on top of any server or Magento related security patches that will require installation. If a business doesn't have the in-house expertise to handle this, maintaining a complex e-Commerce system such as Magento can get expensive. 

How we moved from Magento to Shopify

Moving away from Magento to Shopify is a fairly straightforward process although it does require developer expertise to carry out. In fact Shopify have even put together a brief tutorial about how to import data across and what to expect. 

Shopify's admin panel provides an excellent import tool to allow administrators to import products and customers but you need to use an app or the Shopify API to import other things such as orders. For C&C, we wrote custom Python scripts to sort through and export the Magento website database and to automatically import each product, customer and order into the new Shopify store, preserving a record of every transaction.

For customer accounts there isn't a way to transfer user passwords between two different systems as these are encrypted. So, as soon as all other the data was synced and the Shopify store was ready to go live, existing users were emailed to notify them that their old login details would no longer work, inviting them to setup their new accounts on the new Shopify platorm, making it as painless as possible for the end user.

End user features and functionality such as the C&C loyalty scheme were replicated for the new e-Commerce system with the use of custom built Shopify Apps and other, well supported 3rd party apps found on the Shopify App store. In the case of the loyalty scheme, we were even able to improve its integration to make it easier to use for customers.

Technology aside, we made quite a few aesthetic alterations to together with a bucket load of dynamic transitions and enhancements that further reduced the bounce rate from the already low 9% to an even lower 5%. 

Enjoying the fruits of our labour

Everyone involved have been delighted with the overall response from C&C customers and industry peers alike. The new Shopify store even received an Honourable Mention on Awwwards, which for an e-commerce website is something that we’re really quite proud of and testament to the efforts of our team to create such an engaging and usable customer experience. 

Flattery aside, the accreditation sent thousands of unique visitors to the clients website and although these users weren’t necessarily the right audience for the store their engagement with the store is great for SEO.

Choosing the right platform for your business

By moving to Shopify, C&C were able to reduce their monthly outgoings, removing the stress of ongoing server management and responsibility of securing customer & billing data. With Shopify handling all of this and more straight out of the box it allowed C&C to concentrate on what they're good at, selling products.

Clients have taken a multitude of different paths to making their online store a success. Some intend to start out with Shopify and move on to Magento after the first year and others actually end up changing their mind to instead stay with Shopify. There are obviously a number of factors that contribute to such a decision but bottom line, its a choice that has to be right for the business and what it wants to acheive.
